“Nathan! I don’t think I can do it. I feel so guilty! If Lucinda were to find out that you wanted to buy the medicine without her knowing and I helped you, I’d suffer just as much as you. Besides, this decision is just too cruel…”
Nathan bent his head and his face drained of color. He trembled with unease as he swallowed nervously.
Lucinda fixed a cold gaze on him.
On the other end of the line, Sonny persistently tried to talk him out of it. Lucinda addressed Sonny with a cold tone, “What exactly did Nathan ask you to buy?”
Sonny’s heart skipped a beat as fear coursed through his veins when he heard Lucinda’s voice. He was so startled that he nearly dropped his phone.
For a while, he couldn’t utter a single word and only managed to breathe.
Lucinda sneered and added, “Sonny, you better come clean about this matter. If you confess, I might go easy on both of you. Otherwise, I’ll make sure you both suffer!”
Her teeth clenched together as she viciously threatened him.
Sonny, trembling with fear, hastily tried to explain, “Nathan did it out of love for you. He cares about you so much. He…”
Listening to his pleading words, it took Lucinda a couple of minutes to piece together the whole story. Finally, she understood everything.
“Well, I see. You did what you thought was right. I won’t make things harder for you, and I won’t let your brother seek revenge against you secretly. Don’t worry.”
Sonny was more worried that Lucinda might hold a resentment against Nathan.
“Lucinda, please don’t be angry with Nathan. He…”
Uninterested in his pleas on behalf of Nathan, she coldly interrupted, “Don’t worry. He’ll be fine.” With that, she abruptly ended the call.

The room fell into an eerie silence.
Lucinda’s anger seemed to permeate the air.
She turned her gaze towards Nathan, ready to unleash a sarcastic remark, but before she could speak, something was placed in her hand.
Glancing down at her hand, she saw the red wooden ferule he had took out from the bedside table drawer.
“So, you even took it out of the drawer. What’s the meaning of this?
Do you miss being beaten by me?” She asked knowingly.
He bit his lower lip and his ears flushed red. He said in a low voice, “I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. I should have thought through it. Please don’t be mad at me.”
Lucinda looked at him seriously and stated, “Nate, they’re my babies too. You can’t just make decisions for me without my consent.”
“I know…”
